I do what I know, and I know Drunk Brunch.

I want to tell you about this awesome new organization that I’ve started volunteering for, Right Rides. Amanda (aka drunkbrunch) introduced me to them. Here’s the description from their website:
RightRides organizes volunteers to operate a fleet of up to 6 cars that are donated by Zipcar. Driving Teams can only drive women and LGBTQ individuals home. We started RightRides in 2004 in direct response to an increase in assaults on women walking home by themselves. Our motto is, “Because Getting Home Safely Shouldn’t Be A Luxury” and we recognize that many women and LGBTQ people do not have the extra funds to take a taxi and walking home from public transportation late at night can increase one’s risk of sexual harassment and gender-based assault. Since 2004, RightRides has driven 2,000 Riders safely home. You do not need to feel threatened to call RightRides.
Amanda and I did our first shift on Saturday night. We started at 11:30 pm and drove around until 4:30 a.m. - taking 5 people home total. It was a great way to see the city, meet some interesting night-owls, and feel good about getting people home safely. Moreover, the night went by really quickly!
If you’re interested in volunteering, check out their website. It only takes one training session and some logistics (namely setting up a ZipCar account if you don’t have one). It’s a really awesome organization, and they are always in need or more drivers and helpers to flyer and spread the word.
Also, if you’re a woman or an LGBTQ identifying individual, and you’re in need of a ride home late night (getting off work, leaving a bar, etc.) please feel free to call for the free service at: (718) 964-7781 OR (888)215-SAFE (7233)

Adrian, thank you for writing about this. I absolutely loved my experience with RightRides on Saturday night. It felt really good knowing that people were getting home safely. I look forward to working again next month.
RightRides has a clear mission, an excellent volunteer base and a dedicated staff. Please consider helping them out in any way you can: driving, navigating, dispatching (from home), tabling at events.
Furthermore, you really learn how to navigate the city! (We rocked the BQE/Manhattan Bridge all night!)
